Personally out rap

Led screen, gifPersonally ought rap is a work based on one of my earlier works. In the work from 2020, an analog writing machine was created by the synonyms of several selected words that made sentences. All these synonyms were gathered and ordered to be printed out. Later this became a hand-bound book where words inside could be changed by hand. The work Personally ought rap came about through an assessment in collaboration with Rozet Arnhem (library Arnhem). A digital LED screen, was the given medium.

Looking at my own personal relation to this earlier project, what did I want to tell?

Personally ought rap is an artwork that tells a bit about me; it shows how I experience texting. The many miscommunications, fights or hurt I had to deal with by me misunderstanding words. This work is not about its aesthetic but about its personal meaning/story. Every newly created sentence came from a first word and every word is linked with each other. All the sentences that get created have their own meaning and share meaning with their synonyms. I took a personal sentence “we should talk” that I got over text that ended up in a big misunderstanding. This work shows the different possibilities for every word (in “we should talk”).

All the synonyms were gathered and the words get replaced over time by the synonyms that create new sentences, new interpretations and new meanings. Still, it all started with the same sentence

Personally ought rap -> we should talk

The world must gossip -> we should talk
